va - killed by death MEGAPOST #1 - 10

punk record collectors and avid hardcore nerds alike are no stranger to the killed by death series of compilations. these records mostly showcased some of the best (and, admittedly, worst) of the rare, obscure, and/or overlooked punk glut from around the world during the late 70s and early 80s, sending many otherwise casual record collectors into a sweating fury to find original copies. enter the age of the internet and auction sites such as ebay and every band ever featured in the KBD series now fetches ridiculously high prices. while most of these records are well worth owning, they surely are NOT worth what most people are paying for them.

here for your review are KILLED BY DEATH compilations #1 - 10, a good place to start if you're interested in hearing some rare, obscure punk from all corners of the earth, or to re-acquaint yourself if you have "been there, done that" already. this is actually a re-up for an anonymous commenter. normally, i would probably pass on such a large request under the cloak of anonymity, but i do believe this is should be one of those punk rocker's rites of passage. everyone should be exposed to the joys (and in some cases, utter tastelessness or annoyances) of these collections.

Documentary On Punk 1987 - hollywood

in this video, we learn about the "depunking center," see "satanic" graffiti featuring drawings of such band logos as corrosion of conformity, and learn how anarchy symbols are "warning signs" for concerned parents.

totally recommended for a good laugh!!

the scene - florida punk doc 1987? - steve burcham?

on the topic of florida punk, here's some more fodder from the bowels of google to which there is no corresponding information. search engines seem to be scratching their heads on this one. it's a pretty well-done piece for the mid-eighties, a valiant effort chock full o' punk rock spirit and the sketchy skinheads that plagued the scene. snippets of rhythm pigs, skinny puppy, DOA, along with some of the local florida bands, including one of my favourites, belching penguin! enjoy!!

watch it on google video

stay tuned, more hilarious punk docs to come!!
please post any infos you may have on this video in the comments, thanx!

squatter days - a film by james c. fattu

here's a documentary on philadelphia squatters i've stumbled across on youtube, originally posted in four parts. i've combined the parts into a playlist for easier viewing. thanx to the creators, the subjects, and to whollyghost, one of the subjects of this film who originally uploaded it.

cichlids - be true to your school LP

be_true_to_your_schoola little trip to the bookstore today yielded this dusty piece southern florida new wave punk rock history.  only fitting i should mention that, just yesterday, the fabulous killed by death records blog posted probably the best record to come out of south florida during the period, the eat's - communist radio/catholic love 7" 45.  a perfect companion to the record i'm covering here.

as the story goes, the cichlids made their debut in 1979 and became an overnight local sensation.  trying to cash in on the current trend in punk rock, disco label TK records signed the cichlids, but sadly enough, internal conflicts caused the band to break up shortly after the album was released.  the recent filming of a documentary of the 70s florida punk scene [trailer] prompted a reunion and sparked plans for another album.

08 14 or fight

10 these boots were made for walkin'

12 planned obsolescence
13 ubangi stomp

the record is non-stop energy from the moment the needle drops into the groove on side A, until it picks up from the end of side B.  comparisons may range from early blondie to the rezillos to x-ray spex to the runaways with a sneaky touch of beach boys added in there somewhere as well.  fans of female-fronted punk will not be disappointed!
